EXCLUSION compilation on youtube

Some good chap posted the EXCLUSION compilation on Youtube. The idea was to collect music and writen pieces on anti-sexism and feminism. It was released before we even think a computer could be of any help, before mobile phone and before the Internet. We're talking typewriter, cut and paste layout (of real pieces of paper), post office mail, reel tapes and cassettes.

Welcome to Nabate Records blog!

Hi everyone. I've atempted to write several sort of blog and each time i'm stuck not knowing how to do it the best way. Either in english or in french or both. I cheerish all my dear international friends a lot but it's been AGES i wrote somewhere in my little brain "THINK GLOBALLY ACT LOCALLY" (in fact a simple sticker told me once this very thuth). So many of my friends today don't speak english enough and it is always a problem. I think writing everything in two language it tedious and boring as well.
ANYWAY as for anything to do with NABATE RECORDS it realy as to be in the international language. As far as I can remember NABATE has always been rooted to international communications. It was good to be able to communicate with pen pals all over the world. CD's and Internet didn't exist yet, and we spent all our money at the post office posting lettres to Bresil, UK, Hungaria, Italy, USA, Bulgaria, Russia, Poland, Greece, Italy, Spain, trading records with numerous others punk pals.
So Welcome to this blog all in english then!

EXCLUSION comp. LP (nab001)

OK, let's start with the begining.
EXCUSION was thought as a one off projest at the time when NABATE was not a label but an anarchist micro shop, or info-shop, in 1987. I did not know that I was starting a records label for the next ten years to come.
Compiling an album is a nightmare and many have given up before it comes to reality. People don't answer, loose your letters, delay, bands break up, etc etc.. NABATE was Manu and me at the time. We started the EXCLUSION as a anti-sexist project with three friends from Paris. But we ended up doing our own separate things, since we didn't agree on many things. I won't detail this here, I'm not sure I can even remember! Anyway, back to our compilation, Manu & I eventualy finnished the booklet and compiled everything and got it from the pressing plant end of 1989. It is a time when I still didn't know what the hell was a "mastering". Sadly the pressing plant didn't wanna know either for this release, probably believing it was a just loads of crap. At the time there was no internet to google "mastering", we only had a typewriter. We gave everything to the pressing plant and one day one of the manager called us and asked us to come and listen if there was no mistake. This pressing plant was in the middle of nowhere, especially for people like us with no vehicule! We took the train, then the bus (one every 1h30 hours) to listen that the track of HHH, that was so fast that they thought there was something wrong...
Here is the track list:
1. Atavistic(uk) - Common Ground (3:23)
2. Active Minds (uk) - not your property (1:36)
3. Dona Nobis Pacem (b) - Ballade of Nature (4:40)
4. Pariapunk (fr) - Indifference (1:29)
5. So Much Hate (nor) - Poor Little Macho (2:00)
6. Satanic Malfunction (uk)- Sexual Freedom? I Think Not (2:33)
7. Revulsion (uk) - World Without Hate (4:35)
8. Pleasant Valley Children (uk) - What The World Needs Now (2:37)
9. Dissent (us) - Another's Eyes (3:57)
10. Cringer (us) - Triangle (3:25)
11. Cringer (us) - Take Back The Night (1:15)
12. Dawn Of Liberty (b) - Blockade (3:26)
13. HHH (sp) - Jim (1:41)
14. Culture Shock (uk) - Joyless (3:05)
15. The Ex (nl) - Balcony (2:53)

I could comment tracks and bands but I guess this would be too long and you are probably not interested to read all my blurb anyway. So here is the link to the rar file with the whole album. It was pressed at 1043, came with a big 32p booklet, silk screened postcard and a translation of Sarah's booklet "Hunger Strike" in french. I guess it was not a very sensible idea to make all this for "only" a thousand lucky few. Anyway here it is at last, the music.

Right click here and save it in your computer as you should know.

I thought it was important to share those realease (more to come), it takes me quiet a lot of work, but it's damned good to remember that time. I hope you will enjoy...

But Why?

Today I got an e-mail from a friend from Salt (Girona - Spain) saying he's gonna make a n Especial Nabate Records Radioshow asking me to send him mp3 of some releases he didn't had the oportunity to have. How great is to get such letter from long time no see pen pal! I realised it was maybe high time to secure all the sound I had on some digital form. Unlike Sned and all sensible people I never digitalised the label's catalog. Because i am a real lazy guy and probably also because I didn't want to hear anything from that past anymore. I'm not sure if I want to try to explain why I stopped the whole anarcho-punk activities on this blog. All I know is that I really feel that it was the best years of my life, and each time I meet an old friend I was closed with it is a tremendous pleasure and most of the time it gets me very drunk!

Oh I forgot the purpose of this post. Yep I'm gonna post links to mp3's of the early NABATE's release for those of you who didn't have the chance to hear them. Amazing Revulsion 7" (nab002), chaotic THEY AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET benefit comp. 7", etc...

REVULSION "The Only Revolution / All I Could See" 7" (nab002)

Second record, an amazing record by this band hailing from Norwich  Englang. Personally, I didn't first realise how great it was. It was the time of brutal hc-punk and Class War newspaper and they came with their melodic tunes and sensible & sensitive hippy stuff! It is a shame they broke up soon after the release of this 7". Nabate would have probably release a full lenght and it probably would've been a classic records. The playing, tunes, timing and recording are close to perfect. It is pure joy to listen back to this 7"! Thanks to this records I got to know a great friend from Croatia. He'd wrote to the band asking about thier record and they'd replied that I'd probably have some copies left. I did, it is a great record that didn't sell well. Only 1040 got pressed on 28/02/1991.
The scan of the sleeve doesnb't give a good idea of the color, it is brighter that what it looks, but strangely the paper and ink seems not scan-compatible.

edit: They have two tracks on "Consolidation" 7", a compilation released in 1987. Revulsion have also a track in "Anarcho punk vol 3-Anti-society" comp cd (Overground Records), a track from their early days in "We wont be your fucking poor"(Mortarhate) and in "Words worth shouting" (Radical Change) and "A Vile Peace"(Peaceville). There is also a demo tape. (from 7inchcrust blog) Thanks for the good job. I have this great "Consolidation" comp. 7" and completly forgot about it!

"They Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" 7" comp. (nab003)

A benefit compilation for the Poll-Tax prisoneers (for demonstrating against the tax or not having paid).
The Poll-Tax was a particulary vicious taxe introduced by Margaret Thatcher's government in the UK. Millionnaire living in mansion pays less in poll-tax than a low income family in a small house. No other modern democracy has ever introduced a tax that takes no acount to the ability to pay.
The London Poll-Tax Riot took place on march 31, 1990. Here you have a video all about it made by people of the Class War federation. Class War was an anarchist weekly newsheet intentionally provocative or illegal.

track list:
1. Mushroom Attack (nl) - Fuck Nazis (2:39)
2. Psycho Flowers (scot) - Disease Of Mankind (2:41)
3. Hiatus (b) - The Show Must Go On (1:58)
4. Private Jesus Detector (b) - Paralize Power (2:26)
5. Dreadful (scot) - Wind Of The Storm (3:14)

on the player: Dreadful "Wind Of The Storm"

It was released july 7 1991 at 1548 copies.

I think the DREADFUL song is probably one of the most bizarre tracks Nabate has ever released, not only because they mixed grind-core with reggae-dub. DREADFUL was a combo hailing from Glasgow and was famous for never rehearsing and I think we can hear it on the recording ;-b! Neverthless I think it was a good idea to do those punk/dub experimentations.

Obviously those tracks would get better with some mastering but here you have them as on the vynil:
right-click here and save it to your computer. (you will need to extract it from the rar file, get this here)

I remastered  the DREADFUL song - right click here and save it to your pc.

COUNTER ATTACK "Masters and Jesters" LP (nab21)

Okay, here is another strong release on NABATE that never came out in the CD format. (UNHINGED will be next ;-D)

Released on Nabate Records 15.07.2000,
COUNTER ATTTACK hailed from Alken, Hasselt and Gent in Flanders. They were influenced by early eighties uk bands like Flux Of Pink Indians, Dirt and CRASS at a time where most punks in Belgium were into stuff like Crust, Metal, Hardcore Emo or Power Violence.
This is the second album following the "Laments and Skulls" LP out on Prejudice Production who suffered of lack of mastering. "Masters and Jesters" was mastered by Alain Martin who did a real great job of making sound great a still very cheap recording.
Ivan is now (July 08) with VISIONS OF WAR (web) and Stef is now doing KISS THE ANUS OF A BLACK CAT (web)

Here is a review cought on the net:
«Counter-Attack was an anarcho-punk band from Belgium that was formed in the mid-'90s and existed through 2004, releasing two LPs, "Laments And Skulls" and "Master And Jester." Musically, they are a perfect blend between Crass and Conflict with interesting and catchy songs. Aside from their music, what set Counter-Attack apart from their '90s contemporaries was their ability to take political issues and attack them from unique and interesting angles in a way that i can only compare to Crass. As an example, the song "Zebra" looks at the prison industrial complex from a perspective that questions correctional institutions and their ability to improve a prisoner's behavior, while never excusing the behaviors of those in prison. They combat both the apathetic punk attitude as well as the political punk movement itself in a critical and engaging way without ever coming off as preachy or condescending.» "Sorry State records" (web)

track list:

1. there is a land... (3:28)
2. ...well is there? (4:48)
3. Redundancy (3:59)
4. Our Hands Are Empty (1:42)
5. Zebra (3:20)
6. Cenetistas (4:38)
7. A Whim Of Melancholy (4:15)

KIMUSAWEA "Kurze Abhandlung Vom Menchen Und Seinem Glück" LP (nab13)

Released on NABATE on january 1998. KIMUSAWEA hailed from Frankfurt, Germany, and this 12" is the follow up of their debut ep 7" on the MAXIMUM VOICE PRODUCTION label. The band split up the same year following the relocation of the singer Alex to Berlin. She screamed with now dufunct grindcore band BOLZ'N and has several other project to date (www.myspace.com/alexandravonbolzn). The sleeve was designed by the band and has one hole in the front and the lyrics are printed in varnish on the back. KIMUSAWEA remains the most sophisticated band on the NABATE catalog. Due to their originality and the slit up, the 12" didn't sell well.
edit I: Here the link to the new web site of Alex: http://alphacat.mulomatic.net/
edit II: You can find the 7" on the excelent 7inchcrust.blogspot

track list:
A
1. Star (Look Up My X-File) (3:58)
2. Blut, Blüte (Weltschmerz-Verbresserer) (3:45)
3. Tagebuch EinerbKrankheit, Die Deinen Namen Trug (4:12)
B
4. Winter Der Liebe (3:38)
5. Tief (6:19)
6. Kairos (3:33)

Track 3 includes samples taken from: Wild At Heart (by David Lynch), Life Dances On... (by Robert Frank), Brazil (by Terry Gilliam), Phase IV (by Saul Bass) and Elephant Man (again by David Lynch).

review found on internet:
«This LP combines really cool abstract, artistic material and direct punk rock. Each songs has many layers, giving it a really full sound. Kimusawea have an intense sound that doesn't quit. A lot of German bands have this engaging style, but the female vocals bring in a hint of Nausea that can't be ignored. One track goes deep into a trance-like groove that reminded me of Neurosis. The packaging is also really impressive. The lyrics are printed in varnish on the back cover; a nice effect, but it does make them hard to read at times. A superb record.»

Disaffect "Chained To Morality" lp (nab09)

There was a so called "Glasgow - Liege connection" that was buit over the years, (as much as for Liege-Bradford/Leeds). I don't remember exactly how it started. I know we'd been hitchhicking up to Glasgow and that people who would become longtime friends put us up in their flat, it must be in 1990. Glasgow was European Capital of Culture, Gordy had a mohawk and was singing with Psycho Flowers, who's guitarist was none other than Brian would later do Disaffect and Quarantine. You can hear Gordy on the last song of this album "The Man Who Cleaned the Bog".
People in Scotland seemed to have those unruly manners and customs like kissing in the mouth to say hello or bye bye and having a sense of partying as much as they possibly could. All kind of behaving that could only attract any brave folks hailing from Liege. The cultural exchange reached it's peak when poeple from Liege moved to Glasgow and vis versa! It was very conviniant as Bradford was right on the way where Scots and Liege's folks had friends (and vis versa)
This album of Disaffect was released in 1994. They released on their own Anonimous Records & Panoptic Visions a discography CD. The recording here up for download is ripped directly from the vynil which sounds slightly different due to the masterings.

edit: JOE is now singing with CONSTANT FEAR (web)

Track list
01 Sometimes
02 Everything's Fine
03 Warning
04 Slow Death
05 Chained To Morality
06 Instrumental
07 Internal Life
08 Take It Back
09 State Worse Than Death
10 One Law For Them...
11 ...Another Law For Us

Unhinged "Crime and Punishment" lp (nab015)

I wanted to put this one straight since I played on this and it is not available anymore nor it has ever been re-issued on cd format unlike the rest of the UNHINGED material.
The line up for this record was Ben, Wills, Nat and Al.
I still gets shivers when I hear this record, I can't believe we did it all ourselves, ha ha. When it came out many people thought the sleeve look uggly. The band'd been labeled "emo-crust" which was a big joke amongst the members that simply saw themselves as punk.
It got almost issued on cd in the US until we changed idea (due to very long delay and poor communication) and thought of releasing it on Nabate. Then the band eventually broke up and the cd of this 2nd album never got released. Some labels still would like to re-issue it now (2008) which is kind of amazing. It got released on tape in Poland and Russia.
Maybe I should write a web page with the Unhinged story, line up, gigs etc.. one day.
Here is one of the track on streaming, with quiet a jolly job at the drums.
edit: I've reposted this has it was the wrong file. Here is "Lifetrap".

Track List:
1. Alone For Too Long (3:12)
2. Empty Vee (2:48)
3. Crime And Punishment (3:42)
4. Lifetrap (1:13)
5. The Failure (4:04)
6. Personne Ne Sourit Plus (3:50)
7. Matière Grise (4:49)

.., thanks dhd, it's too bad this record never came out on digital version at the time. The story is that it was meant to be released on cd version with extra film ("Punk Picnic" of Sandrine Drijvers) on the fine Scott Beibin's imprint BLOODLINK Records. But we ran out of patience with Scott's busy and chaotic life and eventually thought NABATE would released it (i.e. ourselves).
Finally the band broke up before no one released the 2nd album on CD. I can tell you that dropping Bloodlink has been a very bad mistake indeed. I will always feel bad to have canceled this release on his label. I really LOVE Scott & hosted this year his amazing "Lost Film Festival" here in Liege, and spent a WONDERFUL time together!! Al
